Sustainable Water management
At the Domburg Holiday Resort we have a big heart for people, animals, and nature. That is why we invested in an innovative water management system. This means that in case of rain, no rainwater is lost and anything that falls on our 6,000m2 of roof space and (paved) floor is collected and filtered into pure fresh water. We use it, with the result that we counteract against the dehydration and salinization of the soil.
Step 1 Water buffer
Rainwater drainage pipes and drainages were laid to an underground water tank. Those pipes collect the rainwater from around 6,000 m² of paved area and first drains it off into the underground jacket water buffer.
Step 2 Shell filter
A horseshoe-shaped tube is attached to the bottom of the water tank, with filter material (DSI infiltration system) on top. After filtering, the water from this pipe is pumped to the bubbles in the sand layers. For this purpose, four wells with seepage pipes were built. In this way, the sand layers are filled up again.
Step 3 Fresh water
What now? After about eight months to a year, the water in the bubbles has had a positive effect! Fresh water replaces salt/brackish water and thus optimizes the fresh-salt boundary of the water. An important aspect is that the source ensures a continuous supply of self-infiltrated fresh water.
Step 4 Sprinkling
To supply the grounds of our company, this fresh water is pumped up again with a level-controlled drainage. In addition to that, it contributes to irrigation and thus grass growth via a special pump sump. Did you know that experts even say that the fresh water is suitable as drinking water for the animals? This way reduces the consumption of too much tap water!
